HOMEOPATHIC FIRST AID

Fear of flying:

  • Aconite:  Fear of flying and crowds. Sudden fright and emotional upset about the upcoming flight. Fear of death. Tremendous anxiety and restlessness. Rapid heartbeat. Strong heart palpitations. Profuse sweating.
  • Argentum nitricum: Anticipatory anxiety and apprehension before the flight. Fear of heights, being trapped. Worried about making the flight on time. Impulse to get off the plane. Fear of elevators and bridges. May need frequent bathroom visits due to nervousness.
  • Arsenicum album: Tremendous pre-flight anxiety. Fear of dying in plane crash. Extreme worry about health. Insomnia after midnight. Chilly.
  • Calcarea carbonica: Anxiety about safety and natural disasters in general. Fear of flying, heights, earthquakes, storms. Issues around security/insecurity. Worry about own safety as well as family.

Food poisoning:

  • Arsenicum album: Bad effects of spoiled fish, meat and water. Burning pain in abdomen, person feels chilly, restless, anxious, thirsty for sips of water. Vomiting and diarrhea together. Better for warmth and warm drinks, worse from cold drinks and sight or smell of food.
  • Phosphorus: If there is marked thirst for cold drinks that initially stay down, but are then vomited up as soon as it´s warmed in the stomach. High level of anxiety with nausea, eased by reassurance. Diarrhea can be painless but may be severe, especially in the evenings when it is difficult controlling bowel movements.
  • Veratrum album: Good for vomiting and diarrhea (if arsenicum album doesn’t help). The skin will be pale and feel clammy to touch. Thirst for cold water which tends to be vomited soon after drinking. Moving around intensifies the nausea.
  • Ipecac: For intense sensation of nausea leading to episodes of vomiting that do nothing to relieve the awful sensation of sickness. Nausea is aggravated by movement of any kind. Patient may have frequent frothy vomit with a lack of thirst. The abdomen feels sensitive and distended with spasmodic colicky pains with constant urge to empty the bowels.
  • China: This it an excellent remedy to help promote recovery after fluid loss such as persistent perspiration, vomiting and diarrhea, causing exhaustion and dehydration.
  • Urtica urens: Indicated where hives are associated with food poisoning, as is often the case after eating bad fish or other seafood.

Food poisoning can be potentially life threatening. If symptoms persist after 24 hours be sure to seek medical assistance. Seek immediate medical attention if difficulty focusing, double vision, convulsion or paralysis.

Sunburn and Sunstroke:

  • Calendula: Use cream to soothe sunburn, or when blisters have broken to promote new skin growth.
  • Belladonna: Violent heat, redness, throbbing, swelling and burning pain.  Worse motion, heat, better with light covering.
  • Cantharis: Violent burning pain and blisters. Pain is raw. Worse touch, better for cold application.
  • Causticum: Serious burns with burning pain, blisters and weakness
  • Cuprum: If sweating and cramps occur with sunburn.
  • Hypericum: Burns with blistering and shooting pains. Worse cold and movement.
  • Urtica urens: Stinging, burning pains and violent itching. Use topically as well as internally. Worse for cold bathing.

If you do get a burn, apply cream of Urtica, Calendula or Hypercal immediately and liberally to the affected area. For more serious burns that begin to blister take Cantharis or Causticum. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

Insect bites and stings:

  • Apis: One of the most common homeopathic remedies indicated for insect stings that are red, hot, swollen and puffy looking at the site of the bite. The patient may experience great stinging and burning pains, accompanied by itching. Additionally, there may be swelling around the mouth, lips and throat, which indicates possible anaphylaxis. Applications of cold compresses soothe and relieve the pain. Seek medical assistance in the event of swelling of the throat.
  • Ledum: The homeopathic remedy Ledum is indicated for bites and puncture wounds where the injury site feels cold and becomes bluish in color. The person wants cold applications for relief at the site of the sting or bite. It is especially helpful in snakebites and stings from poisonous insects such as brown recluse spiders and ticks. Anyone who is bitten by a poisonous insect or snake should be given Ledum to reduce symptoms. Seek immediate medical attention.
  • Hypericum: This remedy is known for its soothing effect on injuries to nerve-rich body areas. It is also useful after puncture wounds, including bites and stings. Shooting pains or pains with numbness and tingling when Hypericum is needed.
  • Formica rufa: Useful for insect stings from fire ants and other bites where there is terrible stinging pain accompanied by intolerable itching and blistering at the site of the bite. The area will be red but not as inflamed or swollen as one that needs Apis.
  • Urtica urens: Indicated where there are large, bright red blotches or hives that burn and sting, violent itching and a crawling sensation on the skin. This homeopathic remedy is especially useful in insect allergies and allergic reactions to bites. It is often indicated for allergic reactions after eating shellfish.
  • Staphysagria: Excellent homeopathic remedy for the prevention of mosquito bites. For those who are prone to attracting every mosquito around it may be taken as a prophylactic, or can be used after being stung to reduce the effects from the mosquito bite.

Sprains, strains and accidents:

  • Arnica: The first remedy to give after a sprain. Whenever trauma produces pain, swelling, bruising, inflammation, and injury think of Arnica. Remember that the key indicator that Arnica is needed is a sore, bruised, and beaten sensation.
  • Ruta: First and foremost think about Ruta for injuries to the ligaments, tendons, and the periosteum or lining of the bones. This remedy is of use in areas where the skin is close to the bone, and in injuries to cartilage and fibrous tissue. (Hypericum is for injuries to nerve tissue, Arnica to muscle  tissue, and Bellis perennis to soft tissue.) Ruta is for fibrous tissue such as ligaments and tendons, the remedy for damage to the surface of bones.
  • Rhus Tox: Sprains and strains are the types of injury where Rhus-tox is most often indicated by the symptoms. The pain or stiffness is nearly always relieved by movement, but getting going is difficult. Starting to move makes it worse, feels better after continued motion. A sprained ankle will perhaps hurt most the following morning, or whenever the patient begins to move after being at rest, so he or she may like to keep the joint moving all the time to prevent it seizing up. Sometimes the patient will be so  weak or exhausted he or she cannot move, even though movement would help. Another indication for Rhus-tox is aggravation from getting wet, or  from damp conditions. Hot bathing and warmth in any form feels better. Arnica and Rhus-tox. are two remedies most often called for after over-exertion, such as straining to lift something heavy or other strenuous physical work (Arnica is not relieved by continued motion).
  • Bryonia: Bryonia is the opposite of Rhus-tox. Everything is nearly always made worse by movement, often even the slightest movement is intolerable. Wants to keep perfectly still. Pressure helps relieve the pain, patient may be holding the affected part or lying on it or may want tight bandaging. Think of Bryonia in broken bones and sprains. Broken ribs often call for this remedy.
  • Ledum:  Ledum can be very useful in treating sprained ankles. Switch from Arnica to Ledum if the ankle looks black with bruising and has the sensation of cold. Warm application feels worse but  finds relief with ice/ice cold application. Ledum is often needed for a few days.

Dosing and frequency:

A 30c potency is often sufficient in most cases of first aid treatment. I do recommend having Arnica on hand in both 30c and 200c potency.

I suggest taking a dose (2-3 pellets) of the remedy every 15. minutes for the first  few doses, and reduce to every 2-3 hours with improvement. If no improvement after 3-4 doses, look into a different remedy. The remedy can be repeated once or twice daily for a couple of days after the initial 24 hours.
