Dental pain and fear of dentist – Homeopathy to the rescue!
The following lists contains the most commonly indicated remedies for the different categories.

Fear of dentist
Aconite – fear and anxiety of the dentist manifested by a sense of panic with extreme fear of the pain. Wants to leave the dentist’s office; fear of dying, fear feels intense and sudden, violent, with palpitations, tremors, sweating and shortness of breath.
Gelsemium – fear of the dentist that feels paralyzing, weakening and can cause diarrhea. Feels numb, pale and motionless with the fear. He is so scared and feels weak and heavy, but do not say anything; feels a prisoner of the fear that paralyzes him.
Argentum nitricum – fear with a sense of hast and hurry. Full of restlessness, tremors and anxiety that may lead to diarrhea. One of the most hurried, impatient and fearful remedies. Feels time is passing too sonly and want to get it over with.
Dosing: Recommended taking one dose of the 30c potency the day before and a second dose one hour before the visit.
Toothache
Belladonna – helps throbbing pain that is worse from touch or motion (e.g. chewing) and worse at night. The mouth may be dry. The person may be irritable, excitable, and feverish with a flushed, hot face.
Chamomilla – helps toothache that is worse from any warmth (whether taking warm food or drink in the mouth or upon entering a warm room) but not better with cold. The pain in unbearable, may radiate to the ears, and is worse at night. The person is very irritable and oversensitive.
Coffea cruda – helps pain that is worse from heat and relieved by holding ice or cold water in the mouth. The person may be extremely excitable and hypersensitive. The pain is intense and the person is desperate with great restlessness.
Hypericum – in any condition where a nerve has been injured. Pains are excessive and sharp, shooting, tearing, or drawing. Tingling, burning, and numbness may also be present. This remedy can be used for pain and sensitivity after root canals or other procedures that impact the nerve or nerve tubules.
Magnesium phosphoricum – neuralgic pains at night, in bed, which are aggravated by by cold and relieved by heat (mostly hot applications) and pressure. Sudden pains which come and go suddenly; radiating pains that makes the person scream. Nervous, restless, sensitive and impulsive people.
Mercurius – Toothache from an abscess or decaying teeth. The pains are tearing, shooting, and often extending to the ears. They are worse at night and worse from eating or drinking anything hot or cold. The person may have bad breath or a metallic taste in the mouth with excessive salivation.
Plantago – Toothache that is hypersensitive to the lease touch, worse from cold air, and worse from both cold and warm drinks. The cheek may swell, the tooth may feel too long, and the person may have excessive salivation. Rubbing Plantago tincture directly on the affected tooth may also give relief.
Dosing: Using the 30c potency, take 3-4 doses every 15-30 minutes until symptoms improve. Stop after improvement sets in and resume with a dose if the symptoms return. If no improvement after 3-4 doses, take another look and find a different remedy that matches your symptoms.
Pain after drilling and filling
Arnica – after traumatic manipulation with soft tissue injury. Sensation of soreness in the gums; dull and continuous pain, like from a blow (been beaten). Sore and bruised feeling.
Hypericum – drawing, electrical, tearing nerve pain, worse at night and when the person moves.
Nux Vomica – for hypersensitive persons with nervous temperament, energetic and very impatient. Pain is worse at night, especially around 3-4 a.m. and from drinking cold drinks, and after eating.
Dosing: Using the 30c potency, take 3-4 doses every 15-30 minutes until symptoms improve. Stop after improvement sets in and resume with a dose if the symptoms return. If no improvement after 3-4 doses, take another look and find a different remedy that matches your symptoms.
Before and after extraction
Arnica – A great preventative remedy to avoid the painful effects and bleeding from from the extraction, especially if soft tissue has been manipulated away from the dental nerve. After difficult extractions with soft tissue injury.
Hypericum – The first remedy to think of to prevent pain and infection before a dental extraction. After, when the extraction has irritated the nerve and leaves a deep nerve pain after the anaesthetic wears off.
Millefolium – can be take the day before and again one hour before the extraction to prevent bleeding following the extraction. Good preventative for people who who bleed easily with bright red blood.
Staphisagria – for extractions when incisions have been done.
Dosing: Recommended taking one dose of the 30c potency the day before and a second dose one hour before the visit.
Bleeding after extraction
Calendula tincture. In addition to the indicated remedy mentioned above for bleeding, local application with undiluted tincture applied using a sterile gauze. The effect of the local application of calendula tincture is usually rapid and frequently helps stop the bleeding in a few minutes.
As always, prevention goes a long way. Make regular appointments with your dentist to maintain the best oral health possible.
